Summary Death toll of Musa Lane building collapse reached 26 as another body has been recovered.
The rescue workers have found another body from the debris of the collapsed building in Musa Lane area of Karachi. Meanwhile, funeral for six of the victims was offered on Sunday. 70 per cent of the debris of the collapsed building has been cleared. Rescue workers apprehend more people could be trapped in the rubble.Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Hussain said the condition of the adjoining building is also fragile, that’s why debris was being removed very cautiously.Initiated by area people through their own resources, the rescue operation was marred by the involvement of several agencies and charities organisations, one after another. Now with a considerable time lost, the slow operation to rescue people trapped under the rubble of the collapsed five-storey building seems to be heading nowhere. The affected families and area people finally lost the patience and staged a demonstration Saturday on Shah Abdul Lateef Bhitai Road of Musa Lane where Qasr-i-Ruqayya came down, to protest against the snail-paced efforts. But the authorities had their own argument to justify their course of action. “The impact of the five-storey building collapse left the abutting structures, which have not been built on very strong foundations, even weaker and more vulnerable. So we can’t move fast or remove the rubble in a flash with the use of heavy machinery,” said an official.
