Hajj corruption case: SC rejects Kazmis bail plea

The Supreme Court has rejected the bail plea of former religious affairs minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi – main accused in Hajj corruption case – and former Religious Affairs Ministry joint secretary Aftab Islam.A two-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja heard the bail plea of Kazmi and Islam.The defendant’s lawyers told the court that the investigation submitted an incomplete challan against the accused and did notinitiate their trial so their bail plea should be accepted.Justice Khawaja remarked that Kazmi hired Ahmad Faiz to rent building in Saudi Arabia and Faiz embezzled a large sum of money.The court said that Kazmi did not even bother to check his activities.The court rejected the bail plea of both accused, saying that evidences of complicity of both the accused were available.Justice Khawaja said that the news published in newspaper about how the pilgrims were maltreated stunned him.He went on to add in what kind of the governance we were living as the protectors of public were looting them.Additional Attorney General KK Agha told the court that according to initial investigation former state minister Shagufta Jumani was also involved in corruption.Justice Sarmad Jlal Osmani questioned why Jumani was not included in the investigation.
