A year on, flood victims await help
Updated on

Summary A year has passed since the devastating 2010 floods, but nothing concrete has been done for victims.

In Liyyah, for instance, the chief minister’s promise to build protective dukes has not been fulfilled till this day. Another starting revelation shows that not a single penny has been released for the construction of dykes to protect low-lying areas. The possibility of recurrence of floods this year has caused fear and uncertainty among the people of Liyyah like other areas devastated by floods.A temporary dyke was constructed on a nullah that runs through the city. The step had miraculously saved a vast area from flooding. The CM had announced construction of a proper dyke, but the project hung in balance owing to lack of development funds. The city government allocated paltry amount of Rs 4.2 million. Irrigation officials are also being accused of dragging feet in constructing smaller dykes in low-lying areas.Similarly, in Charsadda, another area hit by floods, victims still await for their rehabilitation. The roads and bridges destroyed by last year floods await construction. In Sindh, people live in constant fear in anticipation of floods. The damaged roads and bridges have not been constructed in interior Sindh as well.
