Summary The PPPs lead has shrunk in the National Assembly as the MQM quit the ruling coalition.

The Pakistan People’s Party has no trouble to maintain their lead in the National Assembly but separation with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) reduced their numbers to 199.The PPP has 127 MNAs in the assembly while the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid is the largest ally of the PPP with 42 members. The Awami National Party’s 13, the PML-Functional’s 5, the National People’s Party’s 1 and 11 independent and FATA members are also supporting the PPP.There are 141 opposition members in the assembly. The PML-N is the largest opposition party with 91 National Assembly seats. The MQM has joined the opposition with its 25 members. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and the PML-Q’s likeminded group have eight members each while one MNA of the PPP-Sherpao and eight independent MNAs also sits on the opposition benches in the National Assembly. In the house of 342 members the ruling government needs the support of 171 members so even a 141-member combine opposition does not pose an immediate threat to the government.
