A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani questioned how banks waived off loans of billions of rupees recently while knowing well that the matter was pending in the apex Court. The CJP said that the SBP knew everything but was not vigilant.The court said that how bank loans were written-off recently despite lapse of Circular 29 in 2003, and which had been instrumental in writing-off loans of Rs 256 billion from 1971 to 2009.CJP observed that loans beneficiaries never bothered to return the public money adding that people were not as clean as they claim. He said if the SBP was not aware that in the last two years loans worth billion of rupees had been written off on basis of Circular 29 which had lost its effectiveness in 2003. The court also ordered that those bank officers who had extended loans without properly following the rules should also be tried under the relevant laws.The hearing was adjourned till May 30.
