Summary The Indian primer unofficially contacted the army chief months before inviting Gillani to Mohali.
A British newspaper claimed that the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had opened “secret talks” with Pakistan and appointed an “unofficial envoy” about 10 months ago to contact Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The paper wrote that it learnt that the move was intended to build on the cricket-inspired diplomatic thaw between the rivals, some 10 months before inviting Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani to watch Pakistan-India World Cup semi-final in Mohali. The US and the UK appreciated Singh’s initiative for building peace between the south-Asian neighbours, the paper said. However, the Indian prime minister denied the report.
