Babar resigns to plead ZAB retrial

Summary Federal Law Minister Dr Babar Awan resigned on Wednesday to plead ZAB case in court.

A three-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the presidential reference about the retrial of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s (ZAB) case. Awan presented a copy of his resignation before the court. The CJP said that no one should have a doubt about the credibility of the court, adding that he was glad that Awan had resigned to plead the case. The CJP asked him to plead the case with full preparation and the court wanted to give ample time to the case and would also consult the legal experts for assistance. Awan has also filed an application in the Pakistan Bar Council for the restoration of his practicing licence. Talking to the media outside the Supreme Court, he said that no one had faced the injustice to the extent, which ZAB had faced during his trial. He said that he would lead this story of injustice to its logical end.He also thanked Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari for giving him the task to represent Bhutto in the court.
