Summary International womens day is being celebrated the world over. In Pakistan, women have played a vital role as Benazir Bhutto became the first woman to become the prime minister of a Muslim country but on the other side there are cases of women struggling for basic human rights.

The role of women in Pakistan surfaced during the time of Fatima Ali Jinnah. She was known as Mder-e Millat and ever since women in Pakistan have been respected in different walks of life. Begam Liaqat Ali Khan was the governor of Sindh from 1973 to 1974. Benazir Bhutto became the first prime minister of a Muslim country in 1988. With more than 70 women members in the parliament, Fehmida Mirza is the first ever woman Speaker of the National Assembly. In 2007, Namira Saleem became the first Pakistani women to be nominated for a space mission and in 2008 Asma Jahangir played a prominent role in the lawyer’s movement to restore the Judiciary.In 2010, women Naseem Hameed won a Gold Medal at the South Asian Federation Games becoming the fastest woman in all of Asia.
