Summary The suspension of mobile services for the past 17 months in Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu has left the traders worried about businesses. One trader went so far that he locked himself up in a cage to protest the suspension of mobile services.
The military operation in October 2009 in northern Waziristan was the justification for the suspension of mobile services in Lakki Marwat, Tonk and Dera Ismail Khan. Official of the mobile service association, Tahir Khan said that due to the suspension of mobile phone services in Bannu, more than 1200 shop owners, traders and business men are being affected. Due to the ban on the services, the people whose livelihood relied mostly on mobile services have been gravely affected so much so that at times, they don’t even have food. The people have warned the government that if they do not restore the services soon they will have no choice but to resort to Self Immolation.
