Summary PTI leader Jahangir Tareen said LHC CJ destroyed Nawaz Sharif by historic decision

(Web Desk) – In a verdict by Chief Justice of Lahore High Court (LHC) Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, relocation of sugar mills owned by Sharif family to south Punjab has been declared illegal.

LHC ruled that Ittefaq Sugar Mills, Haseeb Waqas Sugar Mills and Chaudhry Sugar Mills, held by members of Sharif family, were illegally moved to southern Punjab. The case was heard by division bench headed by LHC CJ. Intra-court appeals had been filed against shifting of these sugar mills. LHC ordered to move back these mills within the duration of three months.

Petitioner of the case and PTI leader, Jahangir Tareen, had challenged the move in light of 2016 ban that stops shifting of mills to cotton-growing areas of south Punjab. Tareen tweeted, “CJ LHC has destroyed NS & Co in todays historic decision, declaring relocation of their Sugar Mills 2 South Punjab illegal. Allah Al Haq hai.”

In defence, Sharif family lawyer Salman Akram Raja showed concerns regarding the 2016 verdict and said there was no ban on shifting mills south Punjab and it only bars from setting up new mills. Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, representing Jahangir Tareen, responded that both setting up new mills and relocating old ones is the same thing and thus illegal. These mills will affect production of cotton crops and cause shortage of water, he argued.

The court had given a similar order in March, 2017 when it directed authorities to seal two of three sugar mills against relocation. All three mills, namely Haseeb Waqas, Chaudhry Sugar Mills and Ittefaq Sugar Mills, were shifted to southern Punjab despite the ban.
