Summary ECP members even asked politicians to recite holy verses for election qualification: Kamil Ali Agha

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Salaries and benefits of retired members of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) remained a hot topic on Tuesday during a discussion held between standing committee on finance, reported Dunya News.

In a session convened by Senator Saleem Mandviwala, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Kamil Ali Agha said that retired members of ECP, in the name of salaries and benefits earned millions of rupees through illegal means.

He said that these members mocked many politicians during general elections. They even asked politicians to recite holy verses for election qualification, they should be punished anyway, he added.

Secretary Finance questioned if ECP members could work without getting paid for five years? Interrupting his speech, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mohsin Aziz said that it would have been much better if ECP members were kept unpaid, at least ECP could have stopped operating.

On the other hand, ECP members were with the view that their salaries and privileges were assessed in 2011 when they were appointed in ECP. Till now, there had been no legislation in this regard, the members added.
