ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – 22nd Amendment in the Constitution of Pakistan will be introduced in the National Assembly today (Thursday).

The 22nd Amendment involves procedure to be adopted for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms had compiled recommendations about the qualification and other prerequisites upon which the 22nd Amendment was developed.

According to the draft, a retired judge of the Supreme Court (SC), a senior bureaucrat or a technocrat would be appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner. A retired judge of any high court is also eligible for appointment.

In case the Prime Minister (PM) and the Leader of the Opposition do not agree over a candidate, they could dispatch their recommendations separately to the parliamentary committee which will have the final verdict.

The draft states that one member of the Election Commission of Pakistan will be taken from each province. As a onetime exercise, two members shall stand retired after two and a half years while the other two would retire after the next two and a half years.
