Toxic liquor engulfs twelve lives in Lahore, five suspects arrested

KAHNA (Dunya News) – As many as 12 people have died in Kahna after imbibing toxic home-made liquor today (Wednesday).

According to police, the officers raided the house of alleged suspect Asif who escaped from the spot. The security personnel apprehended Asif’s father and launched an investigation after recording the statement of a victim under care at Sheikh Zayed Hospital.

The officers have also held five more culprits during different raids in Lahore while a case has also been registered in this regard.

Earlier in Lahore’s Kahna area, Boota Masih and Gohar Masih succumbed to raw liquor however, several others are under treatment at various hospitals. The death toll has been escalated to eight in past 24 hours.

Liquor poisoning is common in Pakistan, where the Muslim majority is forbidden to consume or sell alcohol and the sale is tightly regulated for minorities and foreigners.

While higher-income Pakistanis buy bootlegged alcohol at heavily-inflated prices, the poor often resort to home-brews that can contain methanol, commonly used in anti-freeze and fuel, that can lead to blindness, liver damage and death.
