PM summons parliamentary leaders' meeting on CPEC today

Summary Several political parties expressed their reservations on changing CPEC's route.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has convened a meeting of parliamentary leaders in Islamabad today (Wednesday), Dunya News reported.

According to details, the meeting is part of PM’s decision to take political parties into confidence over China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar will brief the parliamentary leaders.

Earlier, Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other political parties expressed their reservations and raised fears that smaller provinces will be deprived of CPEC by changing its route.

On the other hand, the government has claimed that no change is being made in the route and termed it as a misleading propaganda.

Moreover, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has contacted all the parties whereas all the leaders’ of political parties including PPP’s co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari will attend the meeting.

The project which was agreed during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pakistan last month will bring a new era of economic prosperity to the region.

The mega project will connect Gwadar Port to China’s Xinjiang region, via a network of highways, railways and pipelines to transport oil and gas.

The economic corridor is considered central to Pakistan-China relations and will run about 3,000 km from Gwadar to Kashgar.
