Summary It is better for the criminal to take his case to the SCP, says Attorney General

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday has reserved the verdict over death row inmate Shafqat Hussain’s plea. The verdict will be given on May 11.

During the hearing, Hussain’s counsel said that they do not want to challenge the verdict of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) but to determine his client’s age. He said that his client has the right to make a clemency appeal as a juvenile criminal. President Mamnoon Hussain could discard the execution verdict of any court and grant life to the death row inmate.

The counsel told the court that the SCP has permitted the courts in the country to entertain the controversial age pleas. “You want to say any criminal whose trial has been completed can reopen the case after making appeal to the President?” Asked the court.
Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana said that it is better for the criminal to take his case to the SCP.

The court said that the confirmation of age is done during the investigation process. However, the IHC reserved the verdict in the case until May 11.
