ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold local government elections in Punjab and Sindh on September 20 this year, Dunya News reported.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja today (Tuesday) issued the directives in a case pertaining to the holding of local government elections.
During case proceedings, the ECP presented written schedule of local government elections.
Justice Jawad S Khawaja remarked that the election commission is a sovereign institution and this right has been granted by the Constitution of Pakistan.
In its judgment, the apex court ordered the election commission to hold local government elections in Punjab, Sindh on September 20 and Islamabad on July 25 this year.
The court has also directed the ECP to ensure holding of local government elections on prescribed dates.
Later, the bench adjourned hearing of the case for an indefinite period of time.
