Summary Police have confirmed that it was a suicide attack.

LAHORE (Dunya News / AFP) – At least five people have been killed and 25 injured in a suicide blast outside Police Lines in Qila Gujar Singh area of Lahore on Tuesday, Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police Mushtaq Sukhera said.

He said that seven to eight kilogram of explosives were used in the blast.

According to CCPO Lahore, the suicide bomber blew himself up prematurely and could not enter the Police Lines.

Several vehicles parked near the site of the blast caught fire and window panes in nearby buildings were also shattered.

The heavily populated area has been cordoned off by security personnel. Huge plumes of smoke was visible in the air.

Emergency has been imposed in hospitals across Lahore and the injured are being taken to the Mayo and Ganga Ram hospitals in the provincial capital.

The site of the explosion lies close to the headquarter of Pakistan Railways and Press Club.

Fear and panic gripped the area soon after the blast.

The blast comes just days after 22 people were killed in a gun and suicide attack on Imamia mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for Friday s attack in Peshawar.

Pakistan has stepped up its fight against militants since Taliban gunmen massacred more than 150 people, most of them children, at a school in Peshawar in December.

Following the massacre, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ended a six-year moratorium on the death penalty.

Since June last year the army has been waging a major campaign against strongholds of TTP and other militants in the North Waziristan tribal area, which lies close to Peshawar.

The military has heralded the success of the operation, which it says has killed more than 2,000 militants, though the precise number and identity of those killed cannot be verified independently.

Lahore has remained relatively peaceful during the TTP s seven-year campaign of bomb and gun attacks, which has left thousands of civilians dead.

But last October a suicide bomber killed at least 55 people at Wagah, Pakistan s main land border with India, close to Lahore.
