PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – At least 20 worshippers were martyred and over 50 wounded after multiple suicide explosions rocked an Imambargah in Hayatabad area of Peshawar, Dunya News reported.

According to the details, the explosion took place while worshippers were offering Friday prayers.

Preliminary investigation has showed that the suicide bombers struck with hand grenades and opened fire before eventually blowing themselves up.

Inspector General (IG) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Nasir Durani said that people inside the mosque successfully intercepted the third suicide bomber and killed him with firing before he could also blow himself up. His suicide vest was later disposed off by the disposal squad.

Just when the nation was recovering from the horrors of Peshawar and Shikarpur terror attacks, Peshawar has bled again months after the deadliest Army Public School attack that left 152 including school children dead. The preliminary investigation points towards various similarities between the two attacks.

According to IG Nasir Durrani, the suicide bombers entered from the back of the mosque after cutting the barbed wire. One of the bombers blew himself up right at the entrance, the other at the courtyard while the third one blew himself up inside the prayer house.

The investigation further shows that the attackers set their vehicle on fire using a specific chemical to destroy the trail that could help with the investigation.

Meanwhile, the bomb disposal squad says that there were four suicide bombers in total out of which, three succeeded to explode. The disposal unit also disabled at least three hand grenades they found on the attack site.

The investigating team has recovered a dead body of a suicide bomber along with six limbs possibly of the other attackers.

Those wounded were rushed to Hayatabad Medical Complex and Reading Hospital where some are reportedly in serious condition.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former president Asif Ali Zardari, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervaiz Khattak, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and MQM chief Altaf Hussain have strongly condemned the terrorist attack whereas Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) and Balochistan Shia Council have announced three-day mourning.

PM Nawaz has also summoned the report of the attack from Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar.
