Eight cops including SHO arrested over Model Town tragedy

LAHORE (Dunya News) – At least seven members of Elite Force and Station House Officer (SHO) Sabzazar Amir Saleem were arrested on Thursday for firing directly at the civilians during the Model Town tragedy, Dunya News reported.
According to the Lahore police, the joint investigating committee is recording the statements of all police officers and personnel who participated in the Model Town operation on June 17. The committee had summoned various police officers in this regard. After the statements were recorded, authorities arrested SHO Sabzazar Amir Saleem along with seven members of the Elite Force including in-charge.
Sources say that the arrested cops were seen shooting straight at the demonstrators in the footages obtained from various television channels.
The sources reveal that more arrests can be made following the findings of the investigation team. Police spokesperson said that the joint investigation team has taken as many as eight cops into custody including an inspector, and that the questioning from the arrested personnel is continued.
As many as twelve demonstrators of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) were killed and another eighty wounded as result of their clash with the police. Punjab government had subsequently formed a judicial tribunal comprising Lahore High Court’s judge Justice Ali Baqir Najfi to probe the tragedy. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif had made Rana Sanaullah to resign from law ministership of the province.
