Grand tribal jirga urges govt to stop unannounced army operation in N. Waziristan

(Web Desk) – A grand trial jirga held in Peshawar on Saturday validated the '2006 Peace Agreement,’ Dunya News reported.  

The agreement was made between the government and tribes in North Waziristan.

Later, the grand tribal jirga released a joint communique, urging the parties to establish peace in accordance to the agreement signed in 2006.

The members of jirga have reiterated full support to maintain peace in North Waziristan.

The communique states that Taliban and Waziristan shura have expressed full confidence in the jirga.

Jirga members have demanded from the government to end unannounced military operations in North Waziristan and relax curfew to ensure peace in the region.

Earlier on Friday, the government gave 15-day deadline to the tribal jirga to expel foreign insurgents from the North Waziristan region.

The jirga was told that military action will be taken if the peace in the North Waziristan region is not established within 15 days. The jirga was also told to ensure safety of government installations and the convoys of security forces.

The North Waziristan grand jirga under headship of Haji Sher Muhammad met Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sardar Mehtab Abbasi and Corps Commander Peshawar Lt. General Khalid Rabbani in Peshawar.
