Senate body enquires details of payments to IPPs

Summary Body on Water and Power has questioned actual source of payment to Independent Power producers.

ISLAMABAD (Online): The Senate body on Water and Power has questioned the actual source of payment to Independent Power producers (IPPs) and directed the Ministry to give complete details in this regard.

The senate body observed that after payment of Rs 480 billion of circular debt the power situation has worse and rather to improve power generation has reduced by 100 megawatt.

“The ministry of water and power has not taken anything from IPPs after billion of rupees payment” senators said.

The sub-committee on water and power that held here on Wednesday under convener ship of Senator Maula Bakhsh Chandio showed concerned about payments to Independent Power Producers and asked the Ministry of Water and Power to give details of payment mechanism to IPPs during two years ago. The legislative body also asked about total power generation through IPPs during last three years and inquired about their actual capacity.

Senator Nisar Muhammad said that when GOP has paid the amount of circular debt then IPPs should produce power at their full capacity and continue same power generation.

The legislative body directed the Ministry of Water and Power to give details of agreements with twenty eight IPPs operating in the country.

During the meeting, legislative body resented the absence of CEO of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) and directed him to appear in the next meeting and give details of recoveries of HESCO and SESCO during last one year.

Convener Maula Bakhsh Chandio said that after up-gradation of transmission lines power outages in HESCO has not reduced so far and people are suffering. He said that billion of rupees spent on up gradation of system but no visible change has been seen so far.
