Peace, justice vital for survival of states: CJP

Summary CJP says it is responsibility of the superior courts to enforce fundamental rights of citizens.


ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that first and the foremost function of the state is to administer justice and maintain peace and internal order.


He expressed these views while inaugurating a three-day international judicial conference in Islamabad on Friday evening.


The Chief Justice of Pakistan said states do not prosper without peace and cannot survive without justice and its proper implementation.


He said all citizens are equal before law and are entitled to equal treatment and protection of law. Our constitution envisages a population free of exploitation and oppression in all its forms, said Chief Justice.


He added it is responsibility of the superior courts to enforce fundamental rights of citizens.


He pointed out that military interventions‚ unstable economy and weak political culture were main contributors of the catastrophic state of affairs in Pakistan.


The Chief Justice said in the democratic setup of Pakistan every institution has to recognize and respect constitutional norms. He said success and efficacy of democratic system depends on the independence of judiciary which cannot be ensured until and unless all state institutions work within the constitutional framework.


In his address of welcome‚ senior Judge of the Supreme Court Justice Tassadiq Husain Jillani said the conference would discuss and share experience on topics like role of judiciary in dispensation of justice‚ public interest litigation and role of judiciary in consumer protection.
