Fake degree: Two former MPs sent to jail, several face arrest

Summary Supreme Court had ordered the lower courts to conclude fake degree cases by April 4.

 

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Locals court on Tuesday sent two former parliamentarians to jail in fake degree case.

 

Former member of National Assembly (MNA) Hummayun Aziz Kurd from Sibi was awarded one year imprisonment and penalty of Rs 5,000.

 

A court in Dera Ismail Khan sentenced Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s former MP Khalifa Abdul Qayyum to three years in jail for possessing a fake degree.

 

Khalifa Abdul Qayyum, as an independent candidate, was elected as provincial assembly member from PK-64 constituency of Dera Ismail Khan during 2008 elections.

 

Former Punjab MP Mir Badshah Qaisrani from Dera Ghazi Khan was indicted in the fake degree case.

 

Arrest warrants were also issued for Punjab’s Ex- MP Malik Langrial.

 

Hearing of the fake degree case against Balochistan’s former MP Ali Madad Jatak was adjourned till Wednesday.

 

Having a graduation degree is no longer a legal requirement to participate in elections, but anyone who is proved of having forged documents in the past stands to be disqualified from the elections and may face criminal proceedings as well.
