DI KHAN (Dunya News) - A court in Dera Ismail Khan has awarded three-year imprisonment to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s former MP Khalifa Abdul Qayyum in the fake degree case.

Additional District and Session Judge Muhammad Arshad Khan heard the case on Tuesday.

After announcement of the judgment, Khalifa Abdul Qayyum was taken into custody from the courtroom and sent to jail.

Khalifa Abdul Qayyum, as an independent candidate, was elected as provincial assembly member from PK-64 constituency of Dera Ismail Khan during 2008 elections.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on March 29 declared that degrees of 54 politicians were fake and another 189 were yet to be verified.

Having a graduation degree is no longer a legal requirement to participate in elections, but anyone who is proved of having forged documents in the past stands to be disqualified from the elections and may face criminal proceedings as well.
