ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared void on Monday the election of Dr Qayyum Soomro as a Senator and ordered for re-election of the technocrat seat in the Upper house of Parliament.
Dr Qayyum Soomro, who is a close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari, was elected as a Senator unopposed on Mar 7 this year on the technocrat seat vacated by former finance minister Dr Hafeez Sheikh.
A three-member bench of the ECP led by Justice (retd) Riaz Kayani heard a petition filed by Tariq Mehmood according to which Dr Qaayum did not meet the standards of the required for the technocrats’ seat in Senate.
Moreover the petition added that Dr Soomro had not submitted details of his assets as well.
