ISAF containers case: NAB won't be given more time, says SC

ISLAMABAD (Online): National Accountability Bureau must present report relevant to ISAF containers within 15 days, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary remarked while hearing the ISAF containers case.

 

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary heard the case on Friday. Rana Shameem Advocate represented FBR while Rana Shahid represented NAB.

 

The Court noted that previously, it was told that the total number of containers is 7,000 whereas now it is being said that it is more than 28,000. If FBR receives amount with regard to ISAF Containers, it can lead to decrease the budget-deficit, the benchremarked.

 

In the report already submitted by FBR, it has been mentioned that 148 cases have been disposed of while notices have been issued in 36 cases that are under consideration.

 

At this, the Chief Justice said that if the process of receiving tax were not expedited, positive results would not be obtained.
NAB, Sindh informed the Court that it might be given time for filing reference against the responsible, at which the apex court noted that only Rs 5.6 million have been recovered in place of billions of rupees.

 

Later on, the court gave NAB time for 15 days to file reference against the responsible. On the other hand, FBR officials were asked to appear before the court on February 25 with the record of tax-receipts.

 

Hearing of the case was adjourned till February 25.
