KARACHI (Online) - After parting ways with the PPP-led government, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Monday submitted an application to the Sindh Assembly seeking allotment of opposition benches, media reports said.
MQM announced to quit the federal and provincial governments in protest against what it described as ‘negative attitude’ of the People’s Party and accusing the government of giving freehand to criminals in Karachi.
Earlier today, Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad, who belongs to the MQM but still holds the office despite his party’s walk out from the coalition, approved resignations submitted by MQM’s provincial ministers.
According to Khawaja Izharul Haq, the MQM ministers have vacated their offices and they have also returned their official vehicles.
He said that MQM’s Rabita Committee will decide as to who will be opposition leader from MQM in the Sindh Assembly.
On Monday, MQM lawmakers chanted slogans within the premises of Sindh Assembly after conclusion of the session.
The party lawmakers formally submitted an application to the Speaker Nisar Khohro seeking allotment of opposition benches in the provincial assembly for MQM members.
However, the Speaker, while talking to reporters, said that the matter of allocation of opposition seats has been adjourned for couple of days.
MQM’s Dr. Sagheer Ahmed affirmed that his party would play effective role in the opposition.
Jam Madad Ali, Functional League’s Leader of the Opposition in the house, said it is right of the MQM to sit on opposition benches due to its majority in Sindh Assembly.
