Opposition to governor’s rule in Balochistan echoes in Senate

Summary Imposition of Governor Rule in Balochistan continued to be heating point in the Senate on Tuesday.

 

ISLAMABAD: Some members from the ruling coalition also joined the opposition in questioning the justification for the decision that has sparked countrywide protests and taken the political turmoil in the country to an alarming proportion.

 

The members expressed their concern over the imposition of governor Rule and efforts to conquer the major province by horse-trading and other negative methods.

 

On a point of Order, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said that imposition of governor rule is once again a big mistake like others adding military rule and others are showing inaptly of the government in this regard.

 

Haideri warned that the country was heading towards a big disaster, if no serious attempt was made to resolve the problem through the process of dialogue. He said the growing instability needs to be addressed on a war footing.

He said the fight between the PPP and PML-N could be fatal for future of democracy.

 

Why governor rule has not been imposed in the NWFP where the law and order situation is going from bad to worse, he questioned.

 

He called for empowering the institutions and suggested that members of the Senate should also be brought in through direct elections.

 

He observed that a change of mindset on the part of political leadership was needed as the country cannot afford political confrontation at this juncture.

 

Haideri said President needs to immediately withdraw the order of imposition of Governor Rule and we also request other parties to oppose this.

 

He said when Governor Rule was imposed in Punjab JUI-F besides being a coalition partner of the ruling party opposed the rule. He said until President withdraws his orders we would continue to protest against this rule his party would continue to proets in the senate and would boycott the proceedings.

 

He later walked out from the Senate proceedings along with other members.

 

Speaking on the floor of the House‚ Spokesperson of the President Farhatullah Babar clarified that Governor s Rule has been imposed in Balochistan under Article 234 (A) and (C) on the receipt of report from the Governor of the province.

 

He said under this Article the provincial government has not been dismissed.

 

He said the decision regarding Balochistan was taken after consultation with all the chiefs of other political parties.
