Summary SC Bar Association’s ex-head Yasin Azad says media should fully enjoy independence of expression.

ISLAMABAD:- The former President Supreme Court Bar Association Yasin Azad has said that the media should be fully independent as Article 204 of the Constitution provides freedom to press.

He was talking to Online on the report of Human Rights Watch published from USA in which it has been revealed that judiciary tried to stop media to condemn the decisions by initiating contempt proceedings against journalists. The report suggests that the powers of Pakistani judiciary regarding contempt of case might be abolished.

He said that media and lawyers have the right to criticise decision of the courts in positive manner. The contempt law is everywhere but it should be kept in mind while serving the contempt notice to anyone if he had made fun of judges or criticised the verdicts.

“Once the court issue a verdict, lawyers and media can disapprove of it. The criticism on court decisions may result in healthy changes in the court affairs”, Azad added.
