Memo case: Haqqani refuses to return Pakistan

Earlier, Memo Commission headed by Justice Qazi Faez Esa rejected Hussain Haqqanis plea to record his statement via video link.During Thursday’s proceedings, Haqqani’s lawyer Zahid Bukhari said that if the petition seeking recording of the statement of his client via video link is rejected, Hussain Haqqani would not come to Pakistan.Advocate Zahid Bukhari gave arguments in favour of his client regarding recording of his client’s statement by video link. Zahid Bukhari also submitted the details of Haqqani’s assets before the commission.According to the asset details, Bukhari told his client has a single account in National Bank which has only Rs 100,000.Referring to Haqqani’s absence, he said his client has been advised by the doctors not to travel.Hearing all the arguments, Justice Qazi Faiz Isa said Hussain Haqqani will be provided all kind of security if he comes to Pakistan.However, Zahid Bukhari replied that the security arranged by the state could not secure PPP leader Benazir Bhutto.Expressing surprise over the statement, Justice remarked that this shows that the government is incompetent and unable to provide security to Hussain Haqqani.The counsel for the defendant said that if the petition is rejected, Hussain Haqqani would never come to Pakistan.The commission also summoned details of the secret fund used by Haqqani during his tenure as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US.The commission adjourned the proceedings until May 3 and it is expected to conduct the case on daily basis from next hearing..
