Summary Power crisis has intensified as citizens are coping with loadshedding up to 16 hours a day.

The situation is so worse in some areas that people have started to brace themselves for complete 24-hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week blackout. The crisis, one analysis says, is being spiraled up owing to erratic supply of oil and gas to the power generating plants. On the other hand, PEPCO sources said that surface of water in Mangla and Tarbela Dams is touching the dead level, decreasing hydel power generation from 5000 MW to by 800 MW.Similarly, the capacity of IPPs and thermal power plants has also suffered due to non-provision of oil and gas.As a result, total shortfall of electric power has reached 5600 MW.Due to unannounced schedule, the urban areas have to face loadshedding more than 10 hours while rural areas are facing this predicament by 16 hours.PEPCO officials are of the view that if they have been provided proper quantity of oil and gas, duration of loadshedding may be reduced. Until then, how worse the situation could get, should not be a hard guess in the coming days.
