Summary ECP says parliamentarians are reluctant to disclose their names due to fear of disqualification.
A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard a petition regarding disqualification of lawmakers holding dual nationality.Syed Mahmood Akhtar had filed a writ petition under Article 184’s Sub Section 3, citing media reports that more than 35 legislators including Rehman Malik, Ch Zahid Iqbal and Ch Iftikhar Nazir were holding dual nationality. The petitioner had requested the court to ask the Election Commission of Pakistan to submit complete record of these lawmakers and declare them disqualify.Election Commission Joint Secretary Sher Afgan informed the court that the Chief Election commission was in Karachi therefore time should be granted to submit the reply. He said that the candidates did not reveal their dual nationality as the commission had banned to contest election with dual nationality.The court adjourned the hearing of the case till March 29 and directed all the parties to submit replies.
