Summary Madrid's upmarket shopping street turns into a fashion parade to promote wool fabric.
Wool claimed space in the wardrobes by turning the Spanish capitals main upmarket shopping street, Serrano, into a fashion parade on Thursday (October 06).John Thorley, chairman of the Campaign for Wool, cut a symbolic wool ribbon to unveiled the Avenue of Wool. The Campaign for Wool was launched by HRH Prince Charles in 2010 to promote the use of wool and its ecological benefits. All of it was started by Prince Charles who was very concerned about the fact that wool was reducing in quantities all around the world. And that is a phenomenon the he wasnt prepared to allow to continue. He asked me if I would work to put people together from around the world to develop a campaign which would stimulate interest and get wool back on to and the program, Thorley said. The fashion designer Estrella Archs dressed the famous street with giant clouds and sculptures made of wool to set the scene for the 24 models that presented her creations.More than 40 shops have expressed their support to the project, some by dressing their shop windows with wool themes and selling products made of the sheep hair during the week.As part of the performance, the organizers set a pen farm with sheep with the Puerta Alcala in the background.Daniel, one of the shepherds taking care of the sheep and president of the Spanish Shear Association said that the wool sector is struggling to keep afloat. Not well, this is a raw material that should worth more. Everything has risen, the shear has risen, for the farmers everything has risen but the wool have low prices, price that rise very slow. This year it seems that it is rallying a bit but you can cover the shear cost and that is it, he said.During this Wool Week customers who purchase wool products for more than 50 euros will participate in a draw for a travel to Australia.
