Generally regarded as the greatest Urdu poet after Ghlaib and Iqbal, Faiz was born on February 13, 1911 in Sialkot. He did masters in Arabic and got married to Alys Faiz in 1930. He also served in the public relations department of the military from 1942 to 1947 and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.Karachi University Vice Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim said that the government incarcerated Faiz in 1951 in Rawalpindi conspiracy case. During his imprisonment he continued his revolutionary poetry and his famous creation Zindan-Nama too came out in those days. Poets and thinkers say that he established his peculiar style in Ghazal and extended the subject matter of Urdu poetry. Renowned poet Seher Ansari says that the poetry of Faiz was not limited to certain time rather it is timeless.
