Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley channels '70s for fall fashion

Summary American fashion designer Cynthia Rowley sent her models stomping down the runway in what appears to be a Fall 2011 trend -- 19'70s-inspired apparel. Rowley seemed to follow suit, but she put her women in velvet to keep them warm at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

Velvet appeared in many incarnations -- a maize-colored suit of cotton velveteen, aged velvet dove gray boots, aged velvet slippers in a dusty turquoise with scarab embroidery. It was enough to make dedicated followers of 1970s fashion wonder if the designer had a secret crush on Lou Reed or anyone else connected with the Velvet Underground. In a backstage interview, Rowley told about the cultural influences behind her Fall 2011 look: For the secretary whos out to get noticed, Rowley created slim faux wrap skirts with a thigh-high slit in front. What made it fresh: it fell below the knee to graze the calf. A Cubist-inspired geometric print in gray, black and white kept the style from looking dowdy.Rowley said, that her Fall 2011 collection included comfortable clothes in luxurious fabrics with glittery touches. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will continue its Fall 2011/Winter 2012 collections through February 17 at Lincoln Center and in other venues in New York City.
