Mayor of Detroit, Dave Bing sparked a debate on the internet when his office rejected the idea to erect a statue of RoboCop in the city. The initial idea came from a guy on twitter who later said the idea was a joke.The joke gained popularity as 4000 people joined together on Facebook to support the idea. A group of artists planned to raise an estimated US$ 50,000 for the project in an online campaign.Detroiters have argued that the movie should not be celebrated as it shows Detroit as a crime infected city. The important thing in the movie is Robocop and the Values he stands for said Brandon Walley, an artist and one of the founders of a fund-raising effort.Bings spokeswoman, Karen Dumas, told the Detroit Free Press that the mayor would consider using public land for a donated RoboCop statue.
