Summary The GC University Botany Department organized a two-day workshop for research on algae plants.
It aims at developing bio-fuel, food, shelter and medicine to fulfill the expanding demands of human society.Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhamamd Khaleeq-ur-Rahman chaired the inaugural session of the workshop titled Algal collection and recent taxonomy of Chlorophycota while Botany Department Chairperson Dr Ghazala Butt, noted botanist Prof Dr Zaheer-ud-Din Khan, Prof Dr Abdul-Hayee from Sind University Jamshoro and Dr Mehboob Ahmad from Punjab University were also present.About 150 researchers from different universities are taking part in the workshop which is spread over six technical sessions. Addressing the training workshop, GCU Botany Department Chairperson Dr Ghazala Butt said that algae were the future of the world as all resources including oil were drying up.He further said continuous research on these plants would enable us to fulfill the expanding demands of human society for food, shelter, medicine.” She said the workshop would provide platform for experts to think and develop new ideas for ecological distribution, commercial use and biofuel production from algae.The Government College, Lahore was raised to the status of a University in 2002.
