Summary The Senate body Monday has recommended release of pending due of Higher Education Commission.
The Standing Committee on Professional and Technical Training recommended immediate release of pending Rs 6 billion for payment of stalled salaries of Higher Education Commission employees.Senate body also expressed dismay over meagre amount of funds allocated for education sector in the current budget as well as least amount of budget spent by the departments.Committee demonstrated displeasure over low quality and standards of education imparted by government educational institutions.The Standing Committee met here with Chairman Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash in the chair to get briefing from the Ministry of Professional and Technical Training (P& TT) about the performance and functioning of the ministry and its attached departments.Secretary P& TT told the meeting that proposed new name of the ministry was ‘Ministry of Education and Trainings’. He also said that vocational training required full attention of the government because it could prove the saviour of the country out of challenges and crisis confronting by the nation.“Our unskilled labour force gets lower wages abroad as compared to skilled force from other countries and once we have trained our labour force volume of our remittances can even be doubled” said Qamar Zaman Chaudhry.He said that Pakistan had the least literacy rate in the region as countries like Nepal and Bhutan had left Pakistan behind in education sector. He also informed the House that Government had provided Rs 2500 million for the payment of salaries of employees of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD).Chairman Committee in his opening remarks said that professional and technical trained workforce had a great role in the socio-economic development.” Any nation having well trained human resource can tackle the economic challenges in a befitting manner”, Senator Bangash observed.The Committee Members also lauded the Chairman for vacation of government lands from illegal occupants at Wafaqi Colony, Lahore.Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Professional and Technical Training said that HEC is an important Organization in promoting education at higher level and preparing a skilled work force to meet our future demand.Recognizing the importance of education, Chairman of the Committee said that terrorism cannot be defeated through bullets. Power of pen is the only remedy to overcome the challenge.
