LAHORE (Dunya News) – A brother in Hadyara village of Lahore injured her sister and killed a man in the name of honour.

According to details, Qasur resident 26-year-old Yasir Hadyara had came to Gond village to meet his relatives.

On seeing his sister and the man Yasir together, he became furious and attacked them with an axe.

Both were shifted to General Hospital however; Yasir succumbed to his injuries while the girl is said to be in critical condition.

Police reached the hospital and shifted Yasir’s body to morgue for post-mortem.

More than 500 people -- almost all women -- die in Pakistan each year in such killings, usually carried out by members of the victim’s family meting out punishment for bringing "shame" on the community and violating traditional values.

In October this year, National Assembly passed legislation closing a loophole that allowed people who killed in the name of "honour" to go free, mandating life imprisonment even if the victim’s relatives forgive the murder.

"A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness" -- a film telling the story of a rare survivor of an attempted honour killing -- won the Academy Award for best documentary short in February.

Amid publicity for the film, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed to eradicate the "evil" of honour killings but no fresh legislation has been tabled since then.
