Summary Mexican police have arrested six suspected gang members tied to extortion

MEXICO CITY: (AP) - Mexican police have arrested six suspected gang members tied to extortion and other crimes in the southern state of Guerrero.

The governmental National Security Commission says the suspects were detained on a highway between the town of Coyuca de Catalan and the coastal resort of Zihuatanejo.

Federal police seized firearms, ammunition, substances believed to be heroin and marijuana and 22 promissory notes from extortion victims.

Mexican drug cartels have branched out to other criminal activities including extortion, at times forcing victims to sign IOUs for protection payments. In response, some communities formed self-defense militias to resist the gangs  demands.

The Commission said Tuesday in a statement that one of the suspects has an outstanding warrant for his arrest in the United States.
