The former HEC chairman says educationists can approach the court against the decision.

Former Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman Professor Dr Attaur Rehman said on Saturday that HEC’s devolution was unconstitutional and it would push the country 50 years back.Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Dr Atta said that HEC’s devolution was a matter of national integrity, adding that if a country was to be destroyed, its education system should be distorted. He said that the 18th Constitutional Amendment had protected the HEC and its devolvement was unconstitutional. If the government not restores the HEC, the educationists will approach the court, he added. He said that some 250 cases of fake degree verification were still pending and the HEC’s devolvement would leave those degrees unchecked. He said that the future of 5,000 students, who were completing their education abroad, would also get uncertain. Renowned legal expert, Barrister Shahida Jamil also opposed the devolution of the HEC.
