DHAKA (Dunya News) - Three people were injured after a locally made bomb exploded near a polling station in Bangladesh’s Gopalganj district during the country’s first general elections following the Gen Z-led political transformation.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 9:30am at the Reshma International School polling center in the Sadar area of Gopalganj, the hometown of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Voting was proceeding peacefully when unidentified individuals allegedly hurled a crude explosive device from across a nearby canal.

The explosion injured two Ansar personnel, identified as Sukanta Majumdar and Jamal Hossain, along with a 14-year-old girl, Amina Khatun, daughter of a voter from the Arambagh area.

The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby clinic where they received first aid treatment.

The blast also caused partial damage to the main entrance of the polling station.

Law enforcement agencies collected evidence from the site and further tightened security around the polling center to ensure that the voting process remains uninterrupted.

Despite the incident, polling continued as scheduled.

The elections are being viewed as politically significant, as citizens are casting their votes for new leadership for the first time following recent political changes in the country.

Direct elections are being held for 300 parliamentary seats, while 50 reserved seats are allocated for women. More than 127.7 million registered voters are eligible to exercise their right to vote.
