ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The auction of the 5G spectrum has been delayed as required infrastructure is still not in place, it has emerged.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, employees responsible for negligence have been suspended under the PEEDA Act. The government, however, maintains that it plans to hold the 5G spectrum auction within the next one to two months.

Official documents reveal that only around three million 5G-enabled devices are currently available in the country, while the rollout plan requires tens of millions of devices. At present, nearly 60 percent of mobile users are still relying on 2G services, with a large number continuing to use outdated technology.

Meanwhile, high import taxes on mobile phones, PTA registration charges, and policy hurdles are acting as a stumbling block for the promotion of 5G technology. The production of locally manufactured mobile devices has also yet to begin.

In addition, less than 15 percent of telecom towers across the country are connected to fibre optic networks, highlighting serious gaps in digital infrastructure. Industry experts warn that without addressing these issues, the 5G rollout may remain a distant dream.
