In a statement, the commission said a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja was held today to review the federal government’s order. Under Clause 2 of the order, Article 140-A of the Constitution has been suspended.
A spokesperson said the suspension of Article 140-A has been applied to all other districts as well. The article deals with the establishment of local governments in the provinces.
The ECP said that under Clause 2 of Article 140-A, holding local government elections is its constitutional responsibility. However, owing to the federal order, it is no longer possible to hold local government polls in the remaining districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa either.
All measures taken so far for the local government elections in the province have been put on hold until further orders.
