PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - The owner of a private school in Peshawar has blamed recent rainfall for the building collapse that killed dozens of people, as the provincial government ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Khan Muhammad said the school’s foundation was laid around 18 months ago and that the area had experienced several days of rain before the collapse.

He said a room on the second floor gave way first, causing the rooms below it to collapse as well. Around 30 children were present in the affected classroom, while the school had approximately 350 students enrolled, he added.

The owner said he had called teachers to help evacuate the children after the incident.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Secretary Inayatullah Waseem, however, said the building was in a dilapidated condition and the department had not received any information about its structural state.

An inquiry committee has been constituted to determine the cause of the collapse, the secretary said.

He added that the government would inspect public and private educational institutions across the province and bear the medical expenses of the injured children.
