ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to enhance cooperation in counterterrorism, drug trafficking, illegal immigration and cybercrime prevention during a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Malaysian counterpart Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in Islamabad on Saturday.

The Malaysian interior minister visited the Ministry of Interior, where he was received by Naqvi. The two sides held delegation-level talks focusing on security and law-enforcement cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to enhance intelligence sharing to counter terrorists and drug traffickers and expressed their commitment to developing more effective joint strategies against terrorism, drug trafficking and human smuggling.

The talks also covered cooperation between the coast guards of the two countries, as well as training and capacity-building programmes.

Naqvi said Pakistan wanted to benefit from Malaysia’s experience in the coast guard sector. The two sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan’s National Police Academy and the Royal Malaysian Police College through training programmes, exchange of expertise and professional capacity-building initiatives.

The meeting also resulted in a decision to establish a joint working group between the two interior ministries. The group will review progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation and improve institutional coordination.

Naqvi said Pakistan and Malaysia enjoyed close and brotherly relations and expressed hope that the Malaysian minister’s visit would help take bilateral ties to a new level.

He also praised Malaysia’s development experience, saying Pakistan was keen to learn from the country’s progress.

The two sides discussed measures to promote tourism and facilitate visa procedures as well. Naqvi described Malaysia as an attractive destination for Pakistani tourists and stressed that easier visa facilities could help strengthen people-to-people contacts.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and agreed to expand cooperation in security, law enforcement, training, tourism and human resources.
