ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flash flood warning for Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir in the wake of torrential rainfalls from July 18 to 23.
The NDMA has issued an alert in view of the possible threat of flash flood situations in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir.
According to the NDMA's National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), advance assessment of all potential threats and timely provision of information to relevant agencies is being ensured.
The NDMA has said that due to heavy rains, there is a risk of flash flooding in local rivers, rain-fed areas and mountainous areas, while medium to high levels of flooding are possible in the rivers and streams of Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to the authority, there is a risk of flooding in the upper and central districts and mountain rain drains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while in Azad Kashmir. There is a possibility of a significant increase in water flow in the Neelum, Jhelum, Poonch and adjacent rivers.
The NDMA has issued a landslide alert in Azad Jammu and Kashmir from July 19 to 24, saying that due to continuous rains, there is a risk of landslides in Neelum, Haveli, Poonch, Muzaffarabad and Bagh. There is also a medium risk of landslides in the mountainous areas of Kotli, Sidhnoti, Mirpur and Bhimber.
According to the NDMA, landslides on the highways of Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Kahuta and Bhimber may affect traffic. Citizens should avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution on mountain slopes, river banks and sensitive areas.
The agency has also issued an alert of possible flood conditions in Punjab and northeastern Balochistan from July 17 to 23. Due to heavy rains, there is a risk of flash floods in the rainy rivers and mountainous areas of Punjab and Balochistan.
There is a possibility of flooding in the storm drains of Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, DG Khan, Rajanpur, Murree and Galiyat. Other districts of Balochistan including Zhob, Sherani, Musakhel, Loralai, Harnai, Sibi, Kohlu and Jaffarabad may be affected.
According to the NDMA, water flow in the Chenab River, Ravi River and their associated rivers is expected to increase, due to which residents of low-lying areas have been instructed to be cautious.
Urban flooding is likely in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad and Sheikhupura, while low-lying areas of Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan and Charsadda may be inundated.
The NDMA has directed relevant agencies to keep emergency machinery and rescue teams on alert and advised the public to stay away from storm drains, flooded roads, and dangerous routes.
