SOUTH WAZIRISTAN (Dunya News) – A woman has been appointed to the Dispute Resolution Council (DRC) in South Waziristan for the first time, marking a significant step towards greater women's representation in community-based dispute resolution in the tribal district.
Social activist Razia Mehsud has become the first woman to join the 17-member Dispute Resolution Council (DRC), a development widely viewed as a historic milestone for women's participation in local decision-making and access to justice.
The council was constituted by the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Dera Ismail Khan on the recommendation of District Police Officer (DPO) Arshad Khan.
Officials said Razia Mehsud's inclusion is expected to strengthen the alternative dispute resolution mechanism by ensuring broader community representation and encouraging greater participation of women in resolving local disputes.
Her appointment has been welcomed by social activists, tribal elders and members of the local community, who described it as an important step towards promoting gender inclusion and enhancing women's role in the justice system in the merged tribal districts.
Observers said the decision could encourage greater female participation in public institutions and community affairs across the region.
