Summary Ishaq Dar said Pakistan will not join the Abraham Accords until a Palestinian state is recognised, reaffirming Islamabad’s longstanding position on Palestine.
WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - Ishaq Dar has reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled stance on the Palestinian issue, stating that the country will not show any flexibility regarding the Abraham Accords until an independent Palestinian state is recognised.
Speaking to journalists in Washington, the deputy prime minister dismissed speculation surrounding Pakistan’s possible participation in the Abraham Accords, saying rumours were circulating but Pakistan’s position remained clear and unchanged.
Ishaq Dar said Pakistan firmly believes that a Palestinian state must be recognised on the basis of pre-1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital, before any consideration can be given to the Abraham Accords.
He stressed that until the Palestinian people receive their legitimate rights and statehood, Pakistan will maintain its longstanding policy and will not alter its position on the matter.
The foreign minister also highlighted Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and dialogue at the international level, saying the country has played a positive part in facilitating contacts between the United States and Iran.
According to Dar, Pakistan contributed to efforts that helped bring the two countries to the negotiating table after nearly 47 years and assisted in establishing initial diplomatic contacts.
He further stated that under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif and Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan has gained greater international recognition, while attempts by India to diplomatically isolate Pakistan have failed.
Referring to his meeting with Marco Rubio, Dar said discussions were held in a cordial atmosphere and were attended by Pakistan’s ambassador and senior officials from the Foreign Office.
Addressing the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, he reiterated that the Kashmiri people should be granted their right to self-determination in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
Dar emphasized that Pakistan remains steadfast on both the Palestinian and Kashmir issues and will continue to advocate for the rights of the affected populations through diplomatic channels.
His remarks came after recent comments by Donald Trump suggesting that following a potential agreement between Iran and the United States, several Muslim countries, including Pakistan, should become part of the Abraham Accords.
