Summary Pakistan calls for end to veto power at UN Security Council and urges Congo ceasefire, opposing expansion of permanent members and stressing global reforms.

NEW YORK (Dunya News) - Pakistan has called for the abolition of veto power in the United Nations Security Council and demanded an immediate ceasefire in eastern Congo, while also opposing any increase in permanent members.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, made these remarks while addressing an intergovernmental negotiations session on Security Council reforms.

He said Pakistan supports an increase in non-permanent seats to balance the influence of veto power and reduce dominance of permanent members.

He added that misuse of veto power by permanent members is a major cause of deadlock on key global issues, warning that expanding veto privileges or adding new permanent members would worsen the situation.

Pakistan also reiterated that the Uniting for Consensus group, co-led by Pakistan and Italy, opposes expansion of permanent seats, while the G-4 group including India, Brazil, Germany and Japan seeks permanent membership.

The envoy said veto power has become outdated in today’s world and stressed the need for comprehensive reforms, including transparency and accountability in its use.

During the session, Pakistan also expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and called for an immediate ceasefire and intensified diplomatic efforts.

He emphasized the need for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2773, stating that a sustainable ceasefire is essential for long-term stability.
Pakistan highlighted illegal mining and smuggling of natural resources as key drivers of conflict and called for regional cooperation and transparent supply chains.

Reaffirming support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan urged the international community to take coordinated and effective steps for lasting peace.
